Binance Gets Drained

Binance puts hack impact at $6.3B
Keystone to destroy 18,835 hardware wallets
OCC finalizes its GENIUS Act stablecoin rule
Visa's stablecoin settlement run rate tops $25B
Maestro's Bitcoin Solver tops 75 BTC in October
Market Prices

Markets: Bitcoin fell to about $76,900 on Thursday as news of the Binance breach spread, with BNB down about 8% and DeFi tokens like AAVE and UNI off more than 10%. Macro offered little relief, with the 10-year Treasury yield hovering near 5%.
Market Updates
Fed Holds as Two Officials Push for a Hike
The Fed held its target range at 3.75% to 4%, with Chair Kevin Warsh saying "It's our responsibility to get inflation down."
Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack dissented in favor of an immediate hike, and futures priced about an 83% chance of one in December.
OCC Opens the Door to Bank Stablecoins
The OCC finalized its GENIUS Act rule, effective Jan. 18, 2027, and urged community banks to issue payment stablecoins and "help shape the future of payments."
The final rule restates the Act's prohibition on issuers paying yield solely for holding, using or retaining their stablecoins, and applications open once OMB approves the OCC's forms.
Keystone to Destroy Wallets After Key Theft
Hardware wallet maker Keystone said attackers stole its device authentication key, warning that "an attacker could use it to produce counterfeit devices that pass authentication checks."
Keystone will destroy 18,835 unsold wallets. It says recovery phrases and private keys weren't exposed, but 25,964 buyer records with personal data were.
Why It Matters
This week set more of the terms for holding digital assets. Banks now have a federal rulebook for issuing stablecoins, the Fed signaled rates aren't coming down soon, and one stolen key forced Keystone to scrap its inventory. Rules, rates and custody all shape what it costs to hold and move these assets.
By The Numbers
$25B
Visa's annualized stablecoin settlement run rate has topped $25B, up roughly tenfold from a year ago. It now spans 10 blockchains and more than 225 stablecoin-linked card programs.
43,000 BTC
Strive bought 6,182 BTC for $511M, taking its holdings to 43,000 BTC. That ranks fourth among public companies, behind Strategy, Metaplanet and Twenty One.
5.5%
Bitcoin's difficulty rose 5.5% to 148.36T on Oct. 29, following a 5.92% increase on Oct. 16. Back-to-back increases mean miners earn less BTC per unit of hashrate, all else equal.
The Deep Dive

The Binance Hack: What the Freeze Couldn't Catch
The Signal
Chainalysis estimates attackers drained $5.9B from Binance hot wallets on Oct. 29, roughly four times the $1.5B Bybit hack in 2025. Binance puts the total impact at about $6.3B and says roughly $3B has been frozen onchain.
The freezes worked where they could. The rest of the story is what they couldn't reach.

What Changed
The attack ran through Binance's withdrawal systems. Binance's initial investigation points to a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop that gave the attacker access to a service container to submit unauthorized withdrawals, and it found no evidence of a private key leak. Blockaid separately flagged an EIP-7702 delegation onchain. A full post-mortem is pending.
Freezes came fast. Tether, Circle, Ripple, World Liberty Financial, First Digital and the Arbitrum Security Council all froze funds. Binance co-founder Yi He said "Binance will cover all hacking losses."
DeFi shut the doors. Aave froze 175 reserves on V3 and 117 on V4, blocking new deposits and borrowing while leaving repayments and liquidations open.
The Read
Before Tether intervened, the exploiter supplied 60M USDT to Aave as collateral and borrowed 19,762 WETH, about $44.6M of ETH that no issuer can freeze, against stablecoins that could be. It hasn't touched the position since, which Aave last showed at $59.9M in collateral against $43.8M in debt.
Native BTC and ETH have no central issuer that can blacklist them on their base chains. Arbitrum's Security Council froze about $30.5M on its network, but about 253,000 ETH sat in exploiter wallets hours later.
The spillover appeared contained. Aave says the exploiter's position "does not put Aave suppliers at risk," and Wintermute and GSR put their Binance exposure under 20% and 5% of net equity.
